Ashwagandha for Tinnitus: Is There Any Evidence?
There is no solid evidence for ashwagandha for tinnitus in the sources we checked. Its trials looked at stress and sleep in adults, mostly for 6 to 12 weeks. Reports of liver injury and thyroid effects add reasons for caution. Quietum Plus lists ashwagandha with no printed amount, so ask a doctor before you rely on it.

Does ashwagandha help tinnitus?
No trial we cite shows that ashwagandha helps tinnitus. The research is about stress, anxiety and sleep.
A 2021 review of 7 studies, with 491 adults in India, found lower stress and anxiety scores over 6 to 8 weeks. A later trial of 120 adults found no drop in perceived stress against placebo (NIH ODS, Ashwagandha). NCCIH says evidence on anxiety is unclear (NCCIH, Ashwagandha).
Stress can make ringing feel louder, which is why people connect the two. But easing stress is not the same as treating ringing, and the trials did not measure it.
| Topic | Evidence we cite |
|---|---|
| Stress and anxiety | Mixed; short trials, mostly in India |
| Sleep | Some preparations may help insomnia |
| Tinnitus | No trial cited |
| Long-term safety | Not established |
What are the ashwagandha side effects?
Ashwagandha side effects include drowsiness, stomach upset and diarrhea, and rarely liver injury. NCCIH says it may be safe for up to 3 months, and long-term safety is unknown (NCCIH, Ashwagandha).
LiverTox rates ashwagandha as a likely cause of clinically apparent liver injury. It usually shows as jaundice and itching, starting 2 to 12 weeks after the start (LiverTox, Ashwagandha). The fact sheet also reports thyroid effects in a small trial (NIH ODS, Ashwagandha).
- Yellow skin or eyes, dark urine or itching: stop and call a doctor.
- Thyroid, diabetes, blood pressure, sedative or immune medicines: ask first.
- Pregnancy and nursing: sources advise avoiding it.
Keep taking prescribed medicine and ask your prescriber about the mix.
What helps ringing in the ears instead?
A hearing exam is the first step. The 2026 guideline favors a comprehensive hearing evaluation, cognitive behavioral therapy and a hearing aid check when hearing loss is found. It says clinicians should not recommend dietary supplements for persistent, bothersome tinnitus (AAO-HNSF Tinnitus Update 2026).
Know the red flags. Sudden hearing loss in one ear needs same-day care. Ringing that beats with your pulse, follows a head injury, or comes with dizziness, weakness or a drooping face needs a doctor, and face weakness is an emergency.

01FAQ
Ashwagandha questions
Can ashwagandha make tinnitus worse?
Our sources do not say. They do not study ringing, so we cannot claim it helps or harms. If your ringing changes after starting any supplement, stop it, tell your doctor and bring the bottle to the visit.
How long can you take ashwagandha safely?
NCCIH says up to 3 months may be safe for some preparations, and long-term safety has not been established. Ask your doctor before taking it for longer, and watch for yellow skin or eyes, dark urine or itching.
Is ashwagandha safe for thyroid problems?
Ask your doctor first. A small trial reported changes in thyroid hormones, and NCCIH does not recommend it for people with thyroid disorders. If you take thyroid medicine, your prescriber needs to know about the supplement.
