Ginkgo for Tinnitus: Trial Results in Plain English

Quick answer

Ginkgo for tinnitus has not shown a clear benefit. A Cochrane review of 12 trials found little or no effect on tinnitus scores, and the evidence was very low certainty. Guidelines advise against ginkgo for persistent, bothersome ringing. Ginkgo is not among the 18 ingredients Quietum Plus lists, so those results do not describe it.

Does ginkgo work for tinnitus?

Ginkgo has not been shown to help tinnitus. The best summary we found is a Cochrane review that pooled 12 randomized trials with 1,915 people (Cochrane, Ginkgo for Tinnitus).

Most compared ginkgo with a placebo. The reviewers rated the trials as high or unclear risk of bias. When they pooled two studies of 85 people, ginkgo may have made little or no difference to tinnitus scores at three to six months (Cochrane, Ginkgo for Tinnitus).

What do the ginkgo trial results mean in plain English?

In plain English, the trials could not show that ginkgo helps, and they could not rule out a small effect either. The authors call the benefits and harms uncertain (Cochrane, Ginkgo for Tinnitus).

That is different from proof of harm or proof of nothing. It means the studies were small and uneven, so no firm promise is fair. The 2026 guideline update tells clinicians not to recommend dietary supplements for persistent, bothersome tinnitus (AAO-HNSF Tinnitus Update 2026).

"Little to no effect" with wide error bars means the data are weak. It does not mean a sure yes or a sure no.

Is ginkgo safe with other medicines?

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before you take ginkgo, especially with blood thinners. We do not know your medicines, so we cannot say it is safe with any of them.

The Cochrane authors found no serious side effects such as bleeding or seizures in four studies of 1,154 people (Cochrane, Ginkgo for Tinnitus). Trials are short and screen their volunteers, so real life can differ. Our page on supplements and medicines lists the questions to bring.

01FAQ

Ginkgo and tinnitus questions

Do doctors recommend ginkgo for ringing in the ears?

No. The 2014 guideline recommended against ginkgo for persistent, bothersome tinnitus (AAO-HNSF Tinnitus Guideline 2014). The 2026 update tells clinicians not to recommend supplements for it. Doctors usually suggest a hearing exam, counseling and hearing aids when hearing loss is present.

Why do ginkgo studies disagree about tinnitus?

Trials differ in size, product, length and how they score ringing. The Cochrane reviewers rated the evidence low to very low certainty, so single positive results are weak. That is why pooled reviews carry more weight than one study.

Could a ginkgo product still help me personally?

Possibly, but trials do not show it, and you cannot know in advance. Ringing can also change on its own. If you try any supplement, tell your doctor, keep notes and stop paying for it if nothing changes.
