Hearing Supplements for Seniors: Safety and Medicines
Hearing supplements for seniors carry more questions than promises. Many older adults take daily medicines, and a capsule with many herbs can interact with them. Guidelines do not recommend supplements for ringing in the ears. If you still want to try one, show the bottle to your doctor or pharmacist first and follow the label.

Are hearing supplements safe for seniors?
Hearing supplements are not automatically safe for seniors, mainly because of medicines. The risk depends on what is in the capsule and what else you take.
Hearing loss grows with age. About 22% of people ages 65 to 74 and 55% of those 75 and older have disabling hearing loss (NIDCD, Quick Statistics Hearing). Many of these readers also take medicine for blood pressure, blood thinning, diabetes or the thyroid.
The FDA generally cannot review a supplement for safety before it is sold, and "natural" does not always mean safe (NCCIH, Using Dietary Supplements Wisely). So the label, your doctor and your pharmacist matter more than the front of the bottle.
| If you take | Why to ask |
|---|---|
| Blood thinners | Some herbs, such as ginger and dong quai, have bleeding case reports with warfarin (Milic et al., Warfarin-Herb Interactions) |
| Blood pressure or heart medicine | L-arginine may lower blood pressure further (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine) |
| Thyroid or diabetes medicine | Ashwagandha may affect thyroid hormones and blood sugar (NIH ODS, Ashwagandha) |
| Parkinson's medicine | Mucuna powder is a natural source of levodopa (Boonmongkol et al., Mucuna RCT) |
Do hearing supplements work for older adults?
No supplement has been shown to restore hearing or to quiet ringing in older adults. The 2026 tinnitus guideline says clinicians should not recommend dietary supplements for persistent, bothersome tinnitus (AAO-HNSF Tinnitus Update 2026).
That fits the trials we can check. A Cochrane review of zinc found no evidence of benefit (Cochrane, Zinc for Tinnitus), and ginkgo showed little or no effect (Cochrane, Ginkgo for Tinnitus).
What does help is a hearing exam. A hearing aid check is part of the same guideline, and aids may help when hearing loss is documented.
- Book a hearing test if words sound muffled or you ask people to repeat.
- Ask whether earwax or a medicine could play a part.
- Treat a supplement as an extra question, not the first step.
When should a senior skip supplements and see a doctor?
See a doctor first if hearing changes suddenly, because that is not a supplement problem. Sudden hearing loss in one ear needs same-day care (NIDCD, Sudden Deafness).
Ringing that beats with your pulse, ringing after a head injury, or ringing with dizziness, weakness or a drooping face also needs medical care. Face weakness is an emergency.
Keep taking prescribed medicine. Some medicines can cause ringing, so ask your prescriber before any change.
Ringing in one ear that stays is a reason for a hearing exam, not for a new capsule.

01FAQ
Senior hearing supplement questions
Can seniors take herbal supplements with blood pressure pills?
Only after asking a doctor or pharmacist. Some ingredients, such as L-arginine, may lower blood pressure further, and others may change how a medicine works. Bring the full ingredient list, since you cannot judge the mix from the bottle front alone.
Is a hearing aid better than a hearing supplement?
For documented hearing loss, a hearing aid check is what guidelines favor, while supplements are not recommended. A hearing aid is a device fitted to your test results. A capsule has no such test behind it, and no supplement has been shown to restore hearing.
Does age change how supplements affect the body?
It can. Older adults often take more medicines, and kidneys or the liver may clear substances more slowly. That is why a pharmacist review is worth the few minutes. Your own doctor knows your history and can say which ingredients to skip.
