Hearing Test: What to Expect at an Audiologist Visit
A hearing test is a painless exam where an audiologist checks which sounds you can hear in each ear. It usually starts with questions and a look in the ear, then beeps through headphones and a speech test. Guidelines advise one for lasting or one-sided ringing. It takes well under an hour for most people.

What happens during a hearing test?
A hearing test has a few short parts: questions, an ear check, tones and words. None of them hurt.
The audiologist first asks about your hearing, noise exposure, medicines and any ringing. Then they look into each ear for wax or other blocks. You sit in a quiet booth wearing headphones and press a button when you hear a beep. Later you repeat words at different volumes.
| Step | What you do | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| History | Answer questions | Likely causes and risks |
| Ear check | Sit still | Wax, fluid or damage |
| Tone test | Press a button at each beep | Softest sounds you hear, ear by ear |
| Speech test | Repeat words | How clearly you understand speech |
| Middle ear test | Hold still for a few seconds | How the eardrum moves |
Who should get a hearing test, and who gives it?
Anyone with lasting ringing, trouble following speech or a sudden change should get a hearing test. An audiologist gives it, often after a doctor or ENT referral.
The AAO-HNSF guideline advises a prompt audiology exam for ringing that sits in one ear, lasts six months or more, or comes with hearing trouble (AAO-HNSF Tinnitus Guideline 2014). The 2026 update recommends a comprehensive audiological evaluation for patients with tinnitus (AAO-HNSF Tinnitus Update 2026).
- Ringing in one ear, or ringing that will not go away.
- Words that sound muffled or hard to follow in noise.
- A sudden change in one ear, which needs same-day care.
- Regular loud work, music or shooting.
How do you prepare for a hearing test?
You need little preparation for a hearing test. Bring your questions, your medicine list and an honest account of the sounds you hear.
Avoid loud noise for a day or so before, so a temporary dullness does not skew the result. Keep taking prescribed medicine and tell the audiologist what you take, including supplements. Our about page says who writes and checks these pages.

See packsWhat happens after the test, and where does Quietum Plus fit?
After the test you get a graph of your hearing and a plan. If loss is documented, a hearing aid check is the favored step (AAO-HNSF Tinnitus Update 2026).
Quietum Plus is not part of that plan. It is a dietary supplement of 60 capsules, and its bottle front says nothing about ears. No serving or amounts are printed, so follow your bottle's label, and show the bottle to your doctor before use. Read more in our guides.
When ringing is a doctor question, not a supplement question

01FAQ
Hearing test questions
Does a hearing test hurt?
No. You wear headphones, press a button at beeps and repeat words. The only touch is a small light or probe at the ear opening during the check. Tell the audiologist if anything feels uncomfortable and they will stop.
How long does a hearing test take?
Most hearing tests take about 30 to 60 minutes, including the questions and ear check. A longer visit is possible if extra tests are needed. Ask the clinic when you book so you can plan your day.
Do I need a referral for a hearing test?
It depends on your clinic and insurance. Some audiologists see patients directly, while others ask for a doctor's referral. Call first. If hearing dropped suddenly, do not wait for a referral and seek care the same day.
