Maca Root Side Effects: What Studies Report

Quick answer

Maca root side effects look mild in the trials we checked, but the evidence is small. A 12-week trial of extracts in 175 adults in Peru reported no serious adverse effects. Reviews call the evidence limited, and none covers hearing. Quietum Plus lists maca without an amount, so those results do not transfer to it.

What side effects does maca root cause?

Maca root has few reported side effects in small trials. In a randomized, double-blind trial, 175 adults in Peru took black maca extract, red maca extract or placebo for 12 weeks. Both extracts were well tolerated, with no serious adverse effects (Gonzales-Arimborgo et al., Maca RCT).

The trial has limits. About 30 people sat in each group, and mood and energy were rated on subjective scales. A product sold as a capsule may use a different form and amount.

A review of four trials on sexual function called the evidence limited, because trials were few, small and uneven in quality (Shin et al., Maca Systematic Review). Neither study looked at tinnitus or hearing.

Who should be careful with maca?

Anyone who takes regular medicine, is pregnant, or has a hormone-related condition should ask a doctor first. The trials did not test those groups, so silence in the data is not a clearance.

A review of herbal sexual enhancers, including maca, found most looked safe at usual doses but noted that few data exist on side effects. It said interactions were the greater concern, since people combine these herbs with other extracts and drugs (Brunetti et al., Herbal Sexual Enhancers).

Keep taking prescribed medicine. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about the mix, not about maca alone.

Does maca help hearing or tinnitus?

No trial we know of shows that maca helps hearing or tinnitus. The studies above looked at mood, energy and sexual function.

Guidelines do not recommend supplements for persistent, bothersome tinnitus (AAO-HNSF Tinnitus Update 2026). See a doctor for sudden hearing loss in one ear, ringing that beats with your pulse, ringing after a head injury, or ringing with dizziness, weakness or a drooping face. Face weakness is an emergency.

One-sided ringing that stays

It calls for a hearing exam with an audiologist or ENT, not a new capsule.

How is maca listed in Quietum Plus?

Maca root sits on the first sales-page tile with mucuna pruriens. Quietum Plus is a capsule supplement, 60 capsules per bottle. The bottle images show no Supplement Facts panel, so the maca amount, the serving and the warnings are not printed.

That gap is the main point. Trial results use known extracts and amounts, and the product gives neither. The front lists Clear Mind, Memory & Focus and Mood Support, and says nothing about hearing. See the mucuna and maca page and the full ingredient list.

01FAQ

Maca questions

Can maca cause stomach upset?

It might in some people, but the trials we checked reported no serious adverse effects. Mild stomach complaints are common with many herbs, so we do not claim a rate. If a supplement upsets you, stop and ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Is maca safe to take for a long time?

We cannot say. The 12-week trial is the longest one we cite, and long-term safety is not established for capsules of unknown strength. Ask your doctor about any supplement you plan to use for months.

Does maca affect hormones?

Reviews study maca for sexual function, and the evidence is limited. We found no data in our sources that settle hormone effects. If you have a hormone-related condition, ask your doctor before trying any maca product.
