Mucuna Pruriens Side Effects: L-Dopa and Interactions
Mucuna pruriens side effects are not well mapped for capsule supplements, but one fact stands out: the powder is a natural source of levodopa. A small trial in Parkinson's patients found mild nausea and dizziness at a large dose. Quietum Plus lists mucuna and prints no amount, so ask your doctor or pharmacist if you take any medicine.

What are the side effects of mucuna pruriens?
The best-documented effects of mucuna pruriens are mild nausea and dizziness, seen in a small trial. The plant's seeds contain levodopa, the same compound used in Parkinson's medicine.
In that crossover trial, 11 patients with Parkinson's disease took 30 g of mucuna powder. They had more frequent mild, short-lived nausea and dizziness than with a levodopa tablet (Boonmongkol et al., Mucuna RCT). The trial tested a large dose of powder in patients, not a capsule supplement.
That matters for readers. We cannot say what a capsule with an unknown amount would do, and the trial did not study interactions.

| Does it cover ringing or hearing? | No |
Does mucuna interact with Parkinson's medicine?
Mucuna can plausibly add to levodopa medicine, because both supply the same compound. The trial shows the powder raised levodopa exposure in the blood (Boonmongkol et al., Mucuna RCT).
It did not test mucuna together with a drug. So the useful message is a question, not a rule: if you take Parkinson's medicine, ask your prescriber before any product that lists mucuna.
Other mood, sleep and seizure medicines are also worth raising, since you cannot judge the mix yourself. Keep taking prescribed medicine, and do not swap it for a supplement.
A doctor may want to know what you take and when. Bring the bottle, not only the name.
Is mucuna pruriens used for ringing in the ears?
No evidence supports mucuna for tinnitus or hearing. The plant is sold mainly for mood, libido and movement-related uses, and the trial above studied Parkinson's disease.
Ringing needs its own check. Sudden hearing loss in one ear needs same-day care (NIDCD, Sudden Deafness). Ringing that beats with your pulse, follows a head injury, or comes with dizziness, weakness or a drooping face needs a doctor, and face weakness is an emergency. Ringing in one ear that stays calls for a hearing exam.
- Hearing exam and cognitive behavioral therapy are what guidelines favor (AAO-HNSF Tinnitus Update 2026).
- Supplements are not recommended for persistent, bothersome tinnitus.

See packsHow does mucuna fit into Quietum Plus?

The front of the bottle lists Clear Mind, Memory & Focus and Mood Support. It does not mention hearing. Because the mucuna amount is not printed, the trial's results cannot be applied to it. Read supplements and medicines before you order.

01FAQ
Mucuna questions
Is mucuna pruriens the same as levodopa?
No, but it contains levodopa. The seeds are a natural source, and a small trial showed mucuna powder raised levodopa levels in Parkinson's patients. A supplement may vary from lot to lot, which is one reason to ask your prescriber before using it.
Can mucuna pruriens cause dizziness or nausea?
It can, in the one trial we cite. Patients who took a large dose of powder reported mild, short-lived nausea and dizziness more often than with a levodopa tablet. The trial was small, so it cannot set a rate for capsule users.
Should I stop mucuna if I take Parkinson's medicine?
Do not change prescribed medicine on your own. Talk to the prescriber who manages it, and bring the supplement bottle. They can say whether the combination makes sense, and they know your dose, which this site does not.
