Sudden Hearing Loss: Why It Is a Same-Day Emergency

Quick answer

Sudden hearing loss is a fast drop in hearing, usually in one ear, that happens all at once or over a few days. Treat it as a medical emergency and get care the same day. Waiting past two to four weeks makes recovery less likely. A supplement, including Quietum Plus, is not a substitute for that visit.

What is sudden hearing loss?

Sudden hearing loss is an unexplained, rapid loss of hearing, either all at once or over a few days, and it usually affects one ear (NIDCD, Sudden Deafness). Some people notice it on waking. Others see it when they use a phone.

Experts estimate 1 to 6 new cases per 5,000 people each year, and only about 10 percent of diagnosed cases have a cause that doctors can name (NIDCD, Sudden Deafness). Ringing, fullness or dizziness may come with it.

Why is sudden hearing loss a same-day emergency?

Sudden hearing loss is an emergency because early treatment gives the best chance of recovery. The NIDCD says to see a doctor immediately (NIDCD, Sudden Deafness).

Care delayed beyond two to four weeks is less likely to reverse permanent loss. Corticosteroids are the most common treatment, and about half of people recover some or all hearing on their own, usually within one to two weeks (NIDCD, Sudden Deafness). You cannot tell in advance which group you belong to.

Do not wait to see what happens

If hearing drops in one ear, get seen today. Do not wait for a supplement, a cleaning or a week of rest to prove itself.

What should you do today if your hearing drops suddenly?

Call a doctor or go to urgent care, an ENT office or an emergency department today. Say the words "sudden hearing loss" so staff can act quickly.

In the UK, the NHS says to go to A&E or call 999 for tinnitus after a head injury or with sudden hearing loss, facial weakness or spinning (NHS, Tinnitus). In the US, call 911 for weakness, a drooping face, severe headache or confusion.

  1. Get seen the same day

Do not book next week. Say your hearing changed suddenly.

  2. Note the timing

Write down when it began, which ear and any ringing or dizziness.

  3. Bring your medicine list

Keep taking prescribed medicine and ask your prescriber about anything that may affect hearing.

Can a supplement help with sudden hearing loss?

No supplement is a stand-in for emergency care. Quietum Plus is a capsule supplement whose sales page says it was "Specially created to support a healthy hearing". That wording is not a treatment claim, and no trial has tested the capsule.

The bottle front mentions Clear Mind, Memory & Focus and Mood Support, not hearing. Amounts are not printed. For the cautions on its ingredients, see the side effects page. For the basics of ringing and hearing, read the tinnitus basics page. Our medical disclaimer explains the limits of this site.

01FAQ

Sudden hearing loss questions

Can sudden hearing loss get better without treatment?

Sometimes. About half of people recover some or all hearing on their own, usually within one to two weeks (NIDCD, Sudden Deafness). You cannot predict which group you are in, so get examined the same day instead of waiting.

Is sudden hearing loss in one ear always serious?

Treat it as serious until a clinician checks. Earwax can also muffle hearing, but you cannot tell the cause at home. A same-day exam sorts out a blockage from a nerve problem that needs fast treatment.

Should I take a supplement while I wait for my appointment?

No. Spend that time getting seen, not shopping. Nothing we cite shows a supplement helps sudden hearing loss. Tell the clinician about any pills, herbs or vitamins you already take.
