Causes explained
What Causes Tinnitus? Noise, Earwax, Medicines and More
What causes tinnitus is not one thing. Common causes are noise exposure, hearing loss, earwax or ear infection, head or neck injury and some medicines. For some people no cause is found. Mayo Clinic says it is a symptom of more than 200 conditions, so a hearing exam matters. Quietum Plus is not a test or a treatment.

What causes tinnitus most often?
Tinnitus is most often linked to noise exposure and hearing loss. The NIDCD also lists certain medicines, earwax or ear infection and head or neck injuries, and some people never find a cause (NIDCD, Tinnitus).
Mayo Clinic says about 9 in 10 people with tinnitus have some noise-related hearing loss, and that tinnitus is a symptom of more than 200 conditions (Mayo Clinic, Tinnitus). The sound is a symptom, not a disease.
| Cause | Examples | Who checks it |
|---|---|---|
| Noise | Concerts, tools, machines | Audiologist |
| Hearing loss | Age or noise related | Audiologist, ENT |
| Blockage or infection | Earwax, ear infection | Doctor, ENT |
| Injury | Head or neck injury | Emergency care |
| Medicines | Some pain relievers and antibiotics | Prescriber |
| Blood vessels | Pulse-like sounds | Doctor, ENT |
Can medicines or supplements cause tinnitus?
Yes, some medicines can cause tinnitus. Mayo Clinic names NSAIDs, some antibiotics, cancer medicines, water pills, malaria medicines and some antidepressants, and it adds that higher doses generally make it worse (Mayo Clinic, Tinnitus).
It also lists some herbal supplements. Keep taking prescribed medicine, and ask your prescriber before any change, since they can weigh the ringing against the reason you take it.
Pills, herbs, vitamins and over-the-counter drugs all matter. See our guide to supplements and medicines for the questions to ask.
Which causes of tinnitus are urgent?
Sudden hearing loss, an injury or stroke-like signs make the cause urgent. The NHS says to go to A&E or call 999 for tinnitus after a head injury or with sudden hearing loss, facial weakness or vertigo (NHS, Tinnitus).
Ringing that beats with your pulse needs a prompt visit too, because blood vessel conditions are the usual cause (Mayo Clinic, Tinnitus). Most other causes are not emergencies, but they still call for a hearing exam.
- Sudden hearing loss in one ear: same-day care
- Ringing after a head injury: emergency care
- Dizziness, weakness or a drooping face: call 911
- Pulse-like or one-sided ringing: see a doctor soon

See packsWhere does Quietum Plus fit among tinnitus causes?
Quietum Plus does not address any cause on this list. It is a capsule supplement that lists 18 ingredients, and no trial has tested it for ringing.
The bottle prints no Supplement Facts panel or amounts, so you cannot tell how much of each herb or mineral you would get. Because some supplements can worsen ringing at higher doses (Mayo Clinic, Tinnitus), read the label and show it to your clinician. Start with the tinnitus basics page and our guides.
Follow your bottle's label.
When ringing is a doctor question, not a supplement question
Sudden hearing loss in one ear (same day), ringing that beats with your pulse, ringing after a head injury, or ringing with dizziness, weakness or a drooping face. Call 911 for sudden weakness or a drooping face. Sources: NIDCD on sudden deafness (NIDCD, Sudden Deafness), the NHS (NHS, Tinnitus), Mayo Clinic (Mayo Clinic, Tinnitus) and the tinnitus guideline (AAO-HNSF Tinnitus Guideline 2014).

01FAQ
Tinnitus cause questions
Can stress cause tinnitus?
Stress does not appear in the cause lists we cite, but the NHS lists anxiety and depression among conditions linked to tinnitus (NHS, Tinnitus). Stress can also make the sound feel louder. A clinician can check hearing first and discuss support.
Is tinnitus always caused by hearing loss?
No, but they often go together. About 9 in 10 people with tinnitus have some noise-related hearing loss (Mayo Clinic, Tinnitus). Other causes include earwax, infection, injury and medicines, so a hearing exam is the right first step.
Can earwax really make my ears ring?
Yes. Earwax or another blockage of the ear canal is a listed cause (Mayo Clinic, Tinnitus). It is also one of the easier causes to treat. Do not push swabs into the canal. Ask a clinician to look.
