Zinc for Tinnitus: What the Trials Found
Zinc for tinnitus has not been shown to work. A Cochrane review of three trials with 209 adults found no evidence that oral zinc improves tinnitus symptoms. The 2014 guideline also advised against zinc for treating persistent, bothersome tinnitus. Quietum Plus lists zinc with no printed amount, so those results cannot be applied to it.

Does zinc help tinnitus?
No, the trials do not show that zinc helps tinnitus. A Cochrane review found no evidence that oral zinc improves symptoms in adults (Cochrane, Zinc for Tinnitus).
The review pooled three randomized trials with 209 adults, all at moderate to high risk of bias. In the one trial with a validated questionnaire, 109 older patients were followed for four months. Improvement was reported by 5% of the zinc group and 2% of the placebo group, a gap too small to rely on. No significant adverse effects were reported.
The 2014 guideline went further. It recommended against ginkgo, melatonin, zinc or other supplements for persistent, bothersome tinnitus (AAO-HNSF Tinnitus Guideline 2014).

Is too much zinc harmful?
Yes, too much zinc can cause harm. The upper intake level for adults is 40 mg a day from food and supplements combined (NIH ODS, Zinc).
Zinc intakes of 50 mg a day or more, usually from supplements, can block copper absorption over several weeks and lead to low copper. Quinolone and tetracycline antibiotics bind zinc in the gut, so timing matters if you take them.
These are general facts, not advice about Quietum Plus, since its zinc amount is not printed. Keep taking prescribed medicine and ask your pharmacist about timing.
- Count zinc from every product, including multivitamins.
- Ask about antibiotics before adding zinc.
- Do not guess an amount; follow your bottle's label.
What should you do about ringing instead?
Start with a hearing exam. The 2026 update recommends a comprehensive hearing evaluation, cognitive behavioral therapy and a hearing aid check when hearing loss is found. It says supplements should not be recommended for persistent, bothersome tinnitus (AAO-HNSF Tinnitus Update 2026).
Know the red flags. Sudden hearing loss in one ear needs same-day care. Ringing that beats with your pulse, follows a head injury, or comes with dizziness, weakness or a drooping face needs a doctor, and face weakness is an emergency. One-sided ringing that stays calls for a hearing exam.
The hearing supplements guide compares what trials found for each common ingredient.

01FAQ
Zinc and tinnitus questions
Can a zinc deficiency cause tinnitus?
Our sources do not say so. The Cochrane review tested zinc in adults with tinnitus, not deficiency, and found no evidence of benefit. If you suspect low zinc, a doctor can check it rather than guess with a supplement.
Do zinc lozenges or cold remedies count toward the limit?
Yes. The upper limit covers zinc from food and supplements combined, so every product counts. Add up the amounts printed on each label, and ask your pharmacist if a product does not print one.
Did the zinc trials report side effects?
The Cochrane review says none of the three trials reported significant adverse effects. That covers short trials in tinnitus patients. It does not clear long use or high intakes, which can affect copper, so keep within the limit.
